Electronics students of Surendra Institute of Engineering and Management (SIEM), Siliguri, gifted a ‘Smart Blind Stick’ developed by them for their final year project on Friday amidst a press meet organized at Siliguri Journalist Club. The stick was handed over to a student of Prerana Educational Institute, Salugara, specially dedicated to the learning and rehabilitation of physically challenged students.
Although, such sticks are available in market at Rs. 4-5 thousand, the students of SIEM have created this tool for rupees one thousand only.

This model has two sensing devices namely, the Ultrasonic Sensor and the LDR Sensor, which will help the blind people detect obstacles on their way. The team is still working on bringing down the price even further.
The students, Abhilash Ghosh, Chinmoy Sarker, Shantanu Nath, Gourab Chowdhury, Joyabrata Das & Gourab Chandra Ghosh have designed this Smart Blind Stick Model in Arduino platform under the guidance of their teacher, Mr. Subham Dutta. This model has been tested and verified at the Research & Development Lab of the Electronics & Communication Department, SIEM, Siliguri.
The students exhibited the model live in the meet.
The meet was attended by Miss Kawita, the visually impaired teacher and the visually impaired students of Prerana Educational Institute, Siliguri
